LEGISLATIVE CALL TO ACTION!
The Academy’s top legislative priority is the Grieving Families Act, a bill that would update New York’s pre-Civil War era wrongful death law. Currently, only New York and one other state (Alabama) don’t recognize emotional damages when a loved one is killed due to someone else’s negligence.
Despite legislative passage with overwhelming bipartisan support last year, ultimately the Governor did not sign the bill into law. The bill has been revised to address concerns expressed by the Governor and reintroduced by Senator Hoylman-Sigal and Assemblymember Weinstein. We expect the legislature to take up the bill again very soon. Once it’s passed we’ll have 10-days to get the Governor to SIGN IT!
One of our members, John Elmore, was featured in a New York Times article last week where he talked a bit about the Grieving Families Act and last year's horrific mass shooting in Buffalo. You can read more here. The Academy believes that the lives of New Yorkers should be worth more than just their paycheck and hope you will join us to correct this 176 year-old injustice.
We need your HELP! Please support our work with a contribution today. Your donation will allow us to continue our work to ensure that families have access to justice and compensation when they need it most.
